ʻIKE
Indigenous Knowledge & Interactive Entertainment

Imi · Kikokikona · Ea — Seek · Create · Empower

Hawaiʻi’s Center of Excellence for the game industry — education, production, publishing, and cultural stewardship in one pipeline.

Why one initiative instead of separate programs?
A finished game needs designers, artists, engineers, writers, audio people, producers, testers, marketers, publishers, and business operators. Running those as separate programs produces enthusiastic learners with nowhere to go next. ʻIKE exists so that someone who starts by playing competitively can move into production, then design, then a paid studio role, then founding a studio — without leaving the ecosystem or the islands.

Mission

ʻIKE serves as Project K4’s flagship initiative and the organizing structure for Hawaiʻi’s interactive entertainment ecosystem. It integrates education, workforce development, entrepreneurship, professional production, publishing, cultural stewardship, and industry partnership into a single education-to-employment pipeline.

ʻIKE is incubated by Ka Makani Kāʻili Koa in partnership with Project K4 and a Native Hawaiian–owned commercial studio partner, and is modeled in part on New Zealand’s Centre of Digital Excellence and on King Kalākaua’s vision of Pacific cooperation.

Co-founded by Kumu Jack Kanai Hobbs IV and Robert Kakalia, Dr.h.c.

Why an Umbrella Rather Than Separate Programs

Interactive entertainment is not a single skill. A finished game requires designers, artists, engineers, writers, audio professionals, producers, testers, marketers, publishers, and business operators — and a sustainable local industry additionally requires competitions, broadcasts, credentials, research, and international relationships. Structuring these as separate programs produces enthusiastic learners with nowhere to go next.

ʻIKE exists so that a learner who starts by playing competitively can move into production, then into design, then into a paid studio role, then into founding a studio — without ever leaving the ecosystem or the islands.
