Description

BreX introduces engineering through modular construction systems, maker education, prototyping, structural design, mechanical systems, and creative engineering challenges. It is deliberately low-barrier: a learner needs no prior technical background, no expensive equipment of their own, and no confidence in mathematics to start.

Cultural Connection

Structural thinking is not new to these islands. Hale construction, lashing techniques, fishpond walls, and canoe hulls are engineering traditions with measurable performance standards. BreX draws these in as legitimate engineering precedent rather than as cultural garnish, in consultation with practitioners.

Current Status — Stated Plainly

BreX does not at present run as an independent programme. Its content is delivered within Nā Mea Hoʻohui, whose construction work covers much of the same ground for younger learners, and BreX is best understood today as the engineering-specification end of that programme rather than a separate offer.

The reason is capacity rather than design. Chanz Agbayani founded Nā Mea Hoʻohui and directs BreX; one person cannot run two cohorts at once, so the engineering programme runs inside the cultural one. BreX is complete in design and constrained in delivery. What it needs to stand alone is a second instructor and the load-testing equipment that distinguishes engineering-to-specification from cultural building — a fundable gap, and a costable one.

Exit Criteria

A learner is ready to progress when they can define a problem, produce a documented design, build to that design, test it, and explain what they would change — independently.
